OVERVIEW

Word Cup is an annual Scrabble championship co-sponsored by the CoCo and the Word Game Players' Organization (WGPO). This year’s Word Cup will take place in Williamsburg, VA, the week of July 31 - Aug. 5, 2026. Competition space and lodging are located at the 4-star Williamsburg Lodge, a Marriott property.



TOURNAMENT DETAILS

  • Location: Williamsburg Lodge, 310 S. England St., Williamsburg, VA 23185

  • Director: Evans Clinchy

  • Games: 31

  • Parameters: WESPA rules, CSW24 lexicon, 5 points per word challenged

  • Divisions: This tournament will feature two divisions. Division 1 is open to all players, with unlimited play-ups allowed. Division 2 is open only to players rated below 1600.

  • Prizes: Generous place and performance prizes will be awarded in both Collins divisions. A grand prize of $7,500 is guaranteed if there are 55 or more entrants. Thank you to the Carter Chapman Shreve Family Foundation for their generous donation to the prize pool.

REGISTRATION

  • Main Event entry fee: $215 for adults; $115 for players under age 18. This fee increases by $50 after May 30. CoCo Premium Members can claim a $15 discount off the entry fee. You can learn about becoming a CoCo Premium Member here.

  • Early Bird entry fee: For adults who are CoCo Premium Members, $20. For all other adults, $35. Players under age 18, $20. You can learn more about the Early Bird here.

  • Commuter fee: All players not staying at the hotel will be required to pay a $100 commuter fee.

    • How to book in the hotel block: To be counted as part of the official hotel block, you must book your room using the Word Cup hotel booking link (TBD) or by calling the hotel directly and requesting the Word Cup room block.

    • A quick note about bookings outside the hotel block: Only reservations made within the official Word Cup hotel room block count toward being “in the block.” Bookings made using hotel points, free nights, third-party sites, or direct hotel bookings made outside the room block are not included, and the commuter fee will apply.

    • Local players: Even if you live near Colonial Williamsburg, the commuter fee still applies if you’re not staying in the official hotel block in order to support the event.

  • Key deadlines:

    • March 1: Register and pay before this date and receive a free commemorative Word Cup T-shirt.

    • June 1: Main Event entry fee increases from $200 to $250.

    • June 30: Hotel room block closes.

    • July 26: Registration deadline.

  • Check-in:

    • Players must check in ahead of the event or risk being dropped from the pairings on Day 1.

    • Check-in will take place on Friday, July 31 between 12 p.m. and 10 p.m.

    • Players who miss the check-in window should contact tournament directors via email to check in.

  • Refunds: Full refunds (minus $5 to cover transaction costs) are available until July 30.

  • CoCo Scrabble Access Fund: You may be eligible to receive financial assistance to enter this tournament. HOTEL DETAILS

  • The Williamsburg Lodge is located at 310 S. England St., Williamsburg, VA 23185.

  • You can book a hotel room at the discounted group rate here through June 30. For phone reservations, call (757) 220-7976.

  • Room rate is $179 per night. Parking is $10 per night for overnight guests. Individuals must guarantee reservations with a valid credit card that will be charged at the time of booking for the first night’s room and tax. Hotel registration deadline for the tournament rate is June 30.

  • Cancellations made inside seven (7) days, and no-shows will forfeit the first night’s room, resort fee, and tax. Guests who depart early after check-in will be charged for the entire stay.

TRANSPORTATION

The primary airport serving Williamsburg is Richmond International Airport (RIC), located 40 miles from the event hotel. Taxi/Uber/Lyft rides are about $70 each way.

The secondary airport serving Williamsburg is Newport News/Williamsburg Airport (PHF), located 15 miles from the hotel, which has two flights daily to/from Charlotte, NC on American Airlines. Taxi/Uber/Lyft rides are about $25 each way.

The Williamsburg Amtrak station is one mile from the hotel and is served by the free Colonial Williamsburg shuttle. The Amtrak Northeast Regional train serves many Northeastern cities.
