Announcing 6 new Scrabble tournaments in 2023
We're almost a full month into 2023 already, and it's been a busy turn of the calendar year for us at the CoCo. We rang in 2023 with our first-ever New Year's tournament in Los Angeles - and right on the heels of that, we welcomed a star-studded field of Collins heavyweights to New Orleans for the Crescent City Cup, one of the highlights of the Scrabble year, an event we were thrilled to co-host with WGPO for the first time this year.
But this is no time to rest on our laurels. Scrabble never stops! And neither do we.
It's time to roll out a slate of new tournaments for you all, the CSW player community, to enjoy in 2023. Our tournament calendar is by no means a finished product - you can expect plenty more tournament announcements like this one in the months to come - but today, we're excited to introduce 6 new events to get you started.
Take a look at our latest tournament offerings, and see if you can find an event (or three) that catches your eye.
Silver Spring, MD
Dates: March 18-19, 2023
Director: Rob Robinsky
Rob is already a seasoned CoCo director at this point, having run a couple of tournaments last year in his old home state of Minnesota. He's since moved to the East Coast to begin a new job and a new life in Silver Spring, just outside of Washington, D.C., and he's excited to host players from all over the D.C.-Maryland-Virginia (DMV) region and elsewhere this March. Join him, won't you?
Portland, OR
Dates: April 22-23, 2023
Director: Conrad Bassett-Bouchard
In addition to being one of the best acronyms in Scrabble, Conrad's Portland-Alberta Beer Scrabble Thing (PABST) event is also one of the best tournaments around, period. The first PABST was all the way back in 2021, when the CoCo first reopened post-pandemic; hard to believe, but we're already coming up on PABST 3.0 now. Come for one of the strongest fields in North America; stay for the incredible craft beer, food trucks, and hipster vibes that only Northeast Portland can offer.
Lincoln City, OR
Dates: May 27-29, 2023
Directors: Jennifer and Evans Clinchy
Speaking of hard to believe: This is our fifth annual beach house tournament! Where has the time gone? In prior years, we've run this one as the Labor Day Oregon Coast Open (LOCO), and it's been great fun; this year, we're offering the same great tournament experience as always, just shifted to the beginning of the summer. Come join us for the... Memorial Day Oregon Coast Open! Yeah, yeah - "MOCO" doesn't have quite the same ring to it. But with great Scrabble, great friends, delicious food and drink, and incredible beach views, you'll get over it.
Saint Louis, MO
Dates: June 10-11, 2023
Director: Chris Lipe
Organizer: Randi Goldberg
Chris and Randi have been graciously hosting Scrabblers in their native STL for a few years now, and it's a pretty awesome city to visit for a weekend. Come and see sights like the world-famous Gateway Arch; the City Museum, home to countless slides and caves and other cool oddities; and Blueberry Hill, the historic music club where Chuck Berry and many other greats have performed over the years. Oh, and the Scrabble competition is top-notch, as is the traditional BBQ feast that players enjoy on the Saturday night. Highly recommend.
Seattle, WA
Dates: July 15-16, 2023
Directors: Jennifer and Evans Clinchy
Jennifer and I enjoy having players over to our home in Northeast Seattle once a year for a weekend tournament. Last year, people enjoyed visiting in mid-July, so we figured we'd run it back with the exact same event in 2023. Come pay us a visit! We'd love to see you, make you a home-cooked meal, and of course, duke it out with you over the board.
Rio Rancho, NM
Dates: Oct. 7-8, 2023
Director: John Karris
Welcome, John! The CoCo team is always eager to welcome new directors on board, and we're excited to have John on the team this year, introducing a new event for players in the Southwest to enjoy. The inaugural Albuquerque/Rio Rancho event should be a blast - and if you stay an extra day, you can catch a "Breaking Bad" tour of ABQ. Um, yes. Sign me up.
We hope everyone out there is excited to attend these events in 2023! If you have any questions about any of them, feel free to contact their respective directors and ask away. And if you have any tips on how we can offer more tournaments like these - a city or a venue to suggest, a prospective director who may work with us, or what have you - definitely contact us and let us know. We'd love to hear from you.
For now, though: Enjoy these 6 events. All are officially open for registration now, so hop over to our tournaments page and sign up today.
